A Vow of Philanthropy

Joan Hornig wants to make weddings less about gifts and more about giving.

This month the Wall Street financier turned jewelry designer is launching a line of wedding jewelry and gifts in partnership with marriage web site TheKnot.com called “Say I Do to Philanthropy.” All profits from the sales of the items go to the charity of the bride and groom’s choice.

Last year, the average wedding budget for New York couples was nearly $57,000, not including the honeymoon, according to a survey from TheKnot.com. Most couples spend thousands of dollars on jewelry, gifts and keepsakes for family and friends, Ms. Hornig says.

“There’s so much money spent at weddings, wouldn’t it be great to instead set some of that aside for charity?” Ms. Hornig says.
